Stay Dry: Keeping Water Outside During Hurricane Season

by Lawton Brothers | Jul 15, 2021

Hurricane Season is upon us, meaning that tropical storms in the state of Florida are imminent. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, over 40% of companies that experience a disaster never reopen. As this is the case, it’s vital to be prepared for what this intensely rainy period can bring, from flooding to water leaks.

Exterior Preparation

At the beginning of the hurricane season, it is important to clean out drains, gutters, and downspouts, in addition to angling spouts out and away from the building to prevent the passageways from overflowing and flooding near the perimeter of your facility. If possible, consider installing shutters or acquiring plywood to cover glass doors and windows in the case of a Hurricane Watch being issued.

If your facility is in an area expected to be impacted by a hurricane, be sure to remove loose objects from the roof and all outdoor signs, as well as bring in any loose objects typically left outside and anchoring those that cannot be moved indoors.

To prevent water from entering the interior of your building, use sandbags, air conditioning duct tape, or heavy plastic to secure all first-floor entrances (leading outdoors).

Interior Preparation

This month, inspect all your emergency equipment and replace any missing or expired/damaged items (including your fire extinguishers and first aid kit). Inspect the building – primarily ceilings, walls, doors, and windows – for possible leaks or compromises in the structure and test your emergency power generator.

If a Hurricane Watch is issued, you will want to move any equipment or merchandise away from windows or skylights to prevent them from potential water damage. Relocate any items within 1-2 feet off the ground to different locations and move electronics and furniture to the inner portions of the building. Be sure to close and lock all doors and windows and draw the blinds or drapes. Any additional layer of protection you can add against high winds and water, the better.
