Renting vs. Buying Mats

Floor mats can greatly optimize a commercial space. Once you’ve decided that commercial floor mats are for you, there is a lot of information to comb through. The first step in your process should be determining whether to buy or rent your future flooring solution.


Compared to buying floor mats, renting them will have a significantly lower upfront cost. Especially useful if you aren’t one hundred percent sold on floor mats, you could potentially test them out and only pay for how long you need the items. Additionally, renting mats means that cleaning them is taken care of by certified professionals. Great results, with little impact on current staffing duties might seem like a pretty strong selling point. Over time, however, rentals can become quite expensive, as many companies require rental contracts and can charge additional fees for delivery and cleaning. 

Rental matting is typically made from nylon or polyester, which can help mitigate some number of debris and moisture but are not designed for trapping dirt and debris. This means that there will be surface buildup that is likely to track throughout the building. Additionally, rental mats come in standard sizes (such as 3x5, 4x6, and 3x10) and are generally limited in color and shape. This makes it hard to find a rental mat to fit strange spaces or to coordinate throughout a nice office space. 


Owning your mats puts you in control of your floor safety. Naturally, someone delivering rentals isn’t as focused and purposeful as your facility manager. Additionally, if you’re on a specific cleaning schedule from your rental company and an accident occurs the day after a delivery, you might be stuck waiting. When you own the mats, you’re in control of the placement and when they need attention. 

Of course, buying mats opens up a world of opportunities and choices for style, size, shape, color, and backing options. This not only lends to a cohesive look and feel to your facility, but it is also vital for safety – having the correct type and size mat with a heavier backing will provide your customers and employees with the safest choice. 

The Difference

While renting mats may seem like a sweet dream thanks to it limited upfront cost and minimal accountability for cleaning and maintenance, it can cost in the long run. Many rental companies require contracts and can charge additional fees. The age and wear and tear of a rental mat is unknown to the renter – especially being laundered with chemicals often, these mats may be fatigued and inconsistent. Rental mats require delivery and pickup, as well as additional energy for washing and drying, and added chemicals to the wastewater, making it the less environmentally friendly option.
