How Often Should Mops be Replaced?

Mop heads can contain more than eight million bacteria per 100 square centimeters (15.5 square inches). That means there could be hundreds of billions of bacteria that are being pushed around on your floors, to spread and multiply. While mops are extremely useful and efficient cleaning tools, ineffective care and maintenance can have the opposite effect.

Spotting the Signs

As a rule of thumb, mop heads should be replaced after 15-30 washes for cotton mops and ~500 washes for modern microfiber mop heads – however, frequency of use and care can largely affect these numbers. If you are unsure of the number of washes, you can aim to replace your mop every 2-3 months (depending on frequency of use).

It may be easier to use signs of wear and tear as an indication of necessary replacement. If parts of your mop head are falling off, parts are discolored (not simply stains due to improper cleaning, but yellowing or deterioration of color), or fibers are looking worn and disfigured, it’s time to replace your mop head.

Proper Maintenance of Mop Heads

Many people don’t consider the fact that a mop needs to be cleaned, but how else will it clean if it’s already dirty itself? To ensure the longest lifespan of your mop head, be sure to clean it and store it properly after every use. Immediately after use, rinse the mop of any cleaning solution and dirt until the water from the mop is clean, then wash the mop head according to the manufacturer’s directions. Using the right detergent for the type of fiber on your mop is especially important, as you can potentially deteriorate the fibers with the wrong chemical. Once the mop is clean, you can wring it out and set it up to air dry. If possible, place the mop head outside on a clothesline as sunlight will naturally kill bacteria and mold. Otherwise, stand the mop upright in a well-ventilated and dry area. The goal is to prevent mildew and bacteria growth during storage to keep the mop uncontaminated.
