Cleaning up After Building Maintenance or Construction

Building maintenance or construction can seem like a huge undertaking. Seeing your building boarded up or walled off for construction and knowing that the completion of the project will mean a lot of cleaning and work will be needed to be done in order to prepare the facility for the public.

The first step in post-construction cleaning is removing large debris – wood, scraps, paint cans, tape, anything larger than your hand should be removed from the space. It’s best to start with the largest pieces and work your way down to smaller items.

Next, you’ll need to address the dust that will inevitably be left behind. By the end of construction, countertops, walls, shelves, and floors are likely to be caked with dust. Start by equipping all cleanup crew with masks to protect them from inhaling the dust and find a vacuum bag designed to filter out drywall dust. Most vacuum bags will not filter out drywall dust and you could potentially recirculate the dirty air throughout the building.

Make sure to dry mop or use a lightly damp cloth to pick up dust off of walls, ceilings, windows, and cabinets/countertops. In cases where there are stains or stubborn debris stuck to a surface, use a small amount of dish soap and water. Once all dust is removed from the surfaces of the room(s), be sure to clean the HVAC and remove any leftover particles that made their way into the filter.

Finally, you can clean and sanitize your space. Starting from the top of the room to the bottom, use a light spray of a commercial disinfectant (that is approved for the surface you’re working on) or a diluted bleach solution. Allow the disinfectant to sit on the surface for the allotted time designated on the label and wipe the surface with a damp cloth.

Additionally, you may want to do a run-through of the outside of your building as well. Use a magnetic sweeper to pick up any nails or screws that were left behind and power wash driveways, sidewalks, and building entrances to remove leftover debris.
